It's a stupid thing to say, really, but it makes sense in emotional context. It's like being cut off by somebody driving and SUV, and finding yourself saying "I hate people who drive SUVs". The pattern-making extrapolation goes one step too far, but it's no less genuine a feeling.
I wonder if that's what it's like being a Republican.
